Why Conde Nast is not the solution to reddit's problems.
By: Ryan
2010-07-26
Lots of users of the popular news website reddit are constantly offering "but you're owned by Conde Nast!" as a solution every time any sort of problem comes up. Recently, the reddit admins made what I think was a good decision, and offered the users the option of subscribing to a beta-test program at a cost of something like $3/mo. This cost was cited as a way of paying for more infrastructure.

But the redditors were still unhappy. "Ju.....

Comments are kindof fishy. I'm working on it. Just letting you know
By: Ryan
2010-07-19
Some of the comments are kindof screwey right now. It's a bad design decision coming back to haunt me (it was written during a marathon of coffee several years ago and I still cannot believe it works). Basically, here is what is happening:

The comments have two properties to them (which you see in the URL when you reply to them), a thread_id and a "daughter_id". The "daughter_id" (I'll call it DI) is a way of referencing the comments within the thread. So while a comment might be.....

What really happens?!
By: celticson

Another perspective...
This is about as clear and easy to understand as it can be - read it!! The article below is completely neutral, ...not anti republican or democrat.
Charlie Reese, a retired reporter for the Orlando Sentinal has hit the nail directly on the head, defining clearly who it is that in the final analysis must assume responsibility for the judgements made that impact each one of us every day.
It's a short but good read. Worth the time. Worth remembering!

The Well, as MY fault?
By: kino101

rant time...

since when have I had the choice to use or not use oil? this is the latest spin, that ultimately the oil in the gulf is of my causing, my fault...really? I suppose I woke up one morning and made the conscious decision to pollute, to get behind the wheel of my car, drive to work, then a grocery and off to wherever else...

get real spinners, YOU decided for me, a long long time ago, that my transportation would be by auto, on rubber tires on freeways built w.....

Why the wikileaks video is important
By: Ryan
2010-04-09
The thing about war is that people die. Parents, moms and dads, they don't come home. Children, brothers, sisters, lovers, friends; they all have to attend the funeral of a person who they're never going to get to see again. War is awful, heinous, something that should be avoided at all costs. By the way, if you're an American, you're at war right now. Have you forgotten? Your sons and daughters are on the other side of the planet trying to stuff pieces of lead through the bodies of other .....

How to use the magic resynthesizer plugin on GIMP
By: Ryan
2010-03-26
We all saw the video of the magic coming in photoshop CS5...well this uses the exact same plugin, but it's free, and it's on GIMP (my favorite editor).

In this, I'm using gimp v2.4 on windows 32 bit.

There are two things (other than gimp, obviously) that I need to make this work:
  • The first is this file (the actual plugin).
  • And

    Don't ever run as root...ever.
    By: Ryan
    2010-03-22
It was a morning like any morning, maybe TOO much like any morning. I stopped at the Circle K by my house and grabbed a Red Flavor Rockstar energy drink for breakfast and began my journey across the valley of the sun towards work. While on my journey the sounds of JonJay, Rich, and Barry Young flowed fourth from my radio and into the surrounding ears and minds of everyone who was stuck in traffic with me. While sitting in traffic I began thinking to myself:

    "Why doesn't anybody love .....

Is Google actually run by evil geniuses?
    By: Ryan
    2010-02-10
Well, maybe not evil in the eyes of their users, but certainly evil in the eyes of yahoo, bing, apple, most of the publishing companies, and every ISP in the United States. In case you missed it, google today announced that they're about to roll out 1Gbps fiber to peoples' homes. To put this into perspective, that is around 200 times faster than the 5Mbps links that seem to be the standard fare for most American ISPs.

Why are they doing this? Some people (who are very lik.....

    Regarding Avatar....
    By: Thom
    2010-01-13
I have some thoughts about Avatar that I think you all need to be aware of so that you can agree en mass and conclude that I am a genius.
Avatar in 3D is the most amazing thing to ever grace movie theater screens. I was blown away. James Cameron, you are a film god.
I loved the film, and hit my favorite news sites looking for people who agree with me and I find a few. I also find stories like this:

    Twitter in 2010
    By: Luke
    2009-12-31
This is a guess on what the news will contain in 2010. Someone will observe a murder, rape, or both. Instead of physical trying to stop it, instead of verbally trying to stop it, instead of calling someone on the phone to stop it, they will update there twitter account about what is going on in front of them. It will not be done with the intention of helping the victim. It will simple be second nature to them to type in what is interesting/unusual around them. They will not think of the har.....

Sea Shepherd step up their offensive against Japanese whalers with the addition of the Ady Gil, a high-speed interceptor boat.
    By: Ryan
    2009-12-27
Sea Shepherd, an organization that has gained notoriety due to the popular television show whale wars, has recently added a high-speed, tri-hull interceptor boat named the "Ady Gil" to its fleet. The Sea Shepherd aim to end commercial whaling and target Japanese whaling vessels with stink bombs, ropes (meant to snag the Japanese boat's propellers), and now green lasers.
The Ady Gil is notable .....

    How to fix the DNS
    By: Ryan
    2009-11-05
There are few people right now (including ICANN) that would try and put forth an argument that the DNS (the domain name system, that which makes the internet work without having to remember IP addresses) is perfect. Some will even go as far as saying that it is broken, that it has been taken over by cancerous leeching assholes that aim to profit off of typos and squat on names that they believe might one day be worth something. I am one such person.

I woke up this morning and was tired from a night of partying with supermodels. Wanting to lay in bed a bit longer and enjoy possibility of a major national disaster that would prevent me from having to attend my place of employment, I opened GL to see if the human race had blown itself up yet.
Sadly, there had been no new links submitted over the course of my slumber :(. This made me sad. I looked at my dog, and she was sad as well.

Well, that little roller coaster ride that was reddit bumrushing the server seems to have more or less calmed down. A few of you seem to have stayed, which is awesome :). If you have any suggestions for things we could do better, ask.

Certainly there are things I won't be able to do, but I will try. I couple of people commented that they are having problems with their login credentials "sticking". Is anyone else having this problem? I tried to replicate it, but I can't.<.....

You with your billions of dollars in revenue from advertising, you with you ambitions of world changing projects like google books, you with your complete integration into my life via google maps, google mail, google sync, google voice, and so forth, you with your droves of genius developers sitting around in your googleplexes trying to think of the "Next Big Thing!"
