Is Google actually run by evil geniuses?
By: Ryan
2010-02-10
Well, maybe not evil in the eyes of their users, but certainly evil in the eyes of yahoo, bing, apple, most of the publishing companies, and every ISP in the United States. In case you missed it, google today announced that they're about to roll out 1Gbps fiber to peoples' homes. To put this into perspective, that is around 200 times faster than the 5Mbps links that seem to be the standard fare for most American ISPs.

Why are they doing this? Some people (who are very lik.....

Regarding Avatar....
By: Thom
2010-01-13
I have some thoughts about Avatar that I think you all need to be aware of so that you can agree en mass and conclude that I am a genius.
Avatar in 3D is the most amazing thing to ever grace movie theater screens. I was blown away. James Cameron, you are a film god.
I loved the film, and hit my favorite news sites looking for people who agree with me and I find a few. I also find stories like this:

Twitter in 2010
By: Luke
2009-12-31
This is a guess on what the news will contain in 2010. Someone will observe a murder, rape, or both. Instead of physical trying to stop it, instead of verbally trying to stop it, instead of calling someone on the phone to stop it, they will update there twitter account about what is going on in front of them. It will not be done with the intention of helping the victim. It will simple be second nature to them to type in what is interesting/unusual around them. They will not think of the har.....

Sea Shepherd step up their offensive against Japanese whalers with the addition of the Ady Gil, a high-speed interceptor boat.
By: Ryan
2009-12-27
Sea Shepherd, an organization that has gained notoriety due to the popular television show whale wars, has recently added a high-speed, tri-hull interceptor boat named the "Ady Gil" to its fleet. The Sea Shepherd aim to end commercial whaling and target Japanese whaling vessels with stink bombs, ropes (meant to snag the Japanese boat's propellers), and now green lasers.
The Ady Gil is notable .....

How to fix the DNS
By: Ryan
2009-11-05
There are few people right now (including ICANN) that would try and put forth an argument that the DNS (the domain name system, that which makes the internet work without having to remember IP addresses) is perfect. Some will even go as far as saying that it is broken, that it has been taken over by cancerous leeching assholes that aim to profit off of typos and squat on names that they believe might one day be worth something. I am one such person.
.
The DNS is, to me, a mess. What w.....

I added a new feature: tell me if you love it
By: Ryan
2009-11-05
I woke up this morning and was tired from a night of partying with supermodels. Wanting to lay in bed a bit longer and enjoy possibility of a major national disaster that would prevent me from having to attend my place of employment, I opened GL to see if the human race had blown itself up yet.
Sadly, there had been no new links submitted over the course of my slumber :(. This made me sad. I looked at my dog, and she was sad as well.
SO! I had an idea!
Most of the links submitted.....

Feature Requests?
By: Ryan
2009-11-02
Well, that little roller coaster ride that was reddit bumrushing the server seems to have more or less calmed down. A few of you seem to have stayed, which is awesome :). If you have any suggestions for things we could do better, ask.

Certainly there are things I won't be able to do, but I will try. I couple of people commented that they are having problems with their login credentials "sticking". Is anyone else having this problem? I tried to replicate it, but I can't.<.....

First of all, welcome! Most of the people showing up here are probably from reddit. Thanks, guys, for all the compliments (and the critiques).
You'll notice that we're a bit different than reddit. First of all, I'm not a programmer, certainly not in the league of Steve and Alexis (spez and kn0thing), so there might be a few things that are...slightly...broken. If you find something, let me know and I'll try to fix it :). My profile page is

Why Google Doesn't Get it With Wave
By: Ryan
2009-10-16
Oh you, google. You with your billions of dollars in revenue from advertising, you with you ambitions of world changing projects like google books, you with your complete integration into my life via google maps, google mail, google sync, google voice, and so forth, you with your droves of genius developers sitting around in your googleplexes trying to think of the "Next Big Thing!" (I'll take a job if your hiring, btw).

Ah yes, Linux. The darling of the technology community. The glowing beacon perched atop the tower built of the hard-work, blood, sweet tears, and carpal tunnel leading the masses to the holy-land known as "open source". Proof positive that we don't need those greedy bastard corporations in order to get online and whine about how much we don't need those greedy bastard corporations goddamnit!

To the people who still do not understand what Google is trying to do with books.
By: Ryan
2009-09-11
Google has embarked on an exceptionally expensive quest to digitize the whole of human knowledge. There is a group of people who wish to stop them.

Something that people seem to forget is that Google is headed by a couple of huge nerds. Scratch that...Google is headed by a couple of huge nerds who are also billionaires. Sometimes they start expensive projects that seem to have no purpose .....

Okay, so lets face it, despite what economists, the news, and the president of the United States is saying, some of us are still broke as hell right now. This can be really depressing and make you feel like a total loser with no friends that lives in his mother's basement and does nothing but troll the internet looking for cheap thrills by pwning newbs (whatever that means).

SSH 0-Day Vulnerability
By: Ryan
2009-07-20
Is it the end of the world? Has unix, that thing that nerds get to dangle in the faces of the lowly windows users, finally been toppled?
Probably not.
There is a group of hackers claiming that they have discovered an SSH vulnerability that gives them the ability to execute code on a remote machine. Basically the holy grail of exploits.
True or not, there are some things that you can do to protect yourself. (You should be doing this anyway).

It's not even my phone but rather my friend bill's. I haven't made an calls myself but my friends seem to find it better then avg. Posting Links

I changed the way the links work a bit!

Now (mods) if you submit a link, you have the option of NOT submitting it to the front page. This is for stuff like the "The Most Interesting Man in the World" type stuff. Things that are funny, but things that are necessarily front-page-worthy, ya dig?

You'll see a new "section" at the top called "See It All". This will display ALL of the links, regardless of if they have made it on the front page or not. .....

The other thing is minor, but just makes things pretty. There is a module for apache (apache is the software that actually serves up web p.....

The ongoing torture debate in the media has been exhausted and its time to move on. You don't become a leader of worldwide terrorist organization overnight. We didn't just torture some random grunts these were high value members of Al Qaeda. The policy has been changed. Its time drop the legal investigation and proceed into the future.

I think it's good we changed policy but I'm not going to lose sleep over us waterboarding men who planned an attack that killed thousand.....

Musical Musings :: Foreign Tongues ::

I'm going to go ahead and throw in one of those lame disclaimers about how this is my opinion, yada yada yada Since this is about music, well I mean I only listen to music that I like, albeit I personally find that to be quite a wide range.

Recently I've been into a lot of foreign bands in mostly in the "hard rock" category. Like not quite metal, but not generic radio-rock either. There are a lot of of exceptions to this genre labeling, but some of the bands I've fou.....

I don't like the advertising model. It feels lazy. The only people that it really seems to help is google. It doesn't have any lasting value for anyone.

Rather than just complaining, I have some ideas. We can offer services and products through GandL and have 5% of the sales (or what every is decided upon) go to a GandL fund. This fund will pay of expenses of GandL first. After that, I am not sure what do to it, maybe buy this .....

Books

I recently finished War and Peace. It was really good. When you all (we need an english equivalent of Usteds) read it, I have some advise that I wish that I would have gotten before I finished the book. It has two epilogs. The first one is the size of a small novella, but it is just as good as the rest of the book. The second is a philosophical essay on freewill. It's not bad, but it also wasn't my cup of tea. After reading the other 900+ pages, it seemed silly to stop with only 30 .....
