I'm paraphrasing a conversation I had the with somebody a few days ago, but internet is, in some ways, intellectual masturbation. Talking to people feels good...it's enjoyable, but it requires work.

The ability to have thousands and thousands and thousands of people to talk to and things to read about and stuff to "do" all without having to leave your chair is enticing, and a bit dangerous.

A speaker I heard a while ago (or maybe it was an article? I can't remember) said that the internet is like having a party, it's really great because it's bringing people together, but it's as if the party was lots and lots of people in one place, but all standing in their own room and talking to each other over a telephone.

You get the feeling of actual interactions without actually having to go out and...like...interact with people.
Not harping on anybody for internetting, btw...this is coming from a kid who spent his youth trolling fark, HDC, and slashdot, so... :).

that many, (including myself) are concerned enough about privacy- like the flaws in facebook, myspace and now google- to avoid such sites. since these places need constant growth they are perhaps going to address these concerns. yeah, sure...
people not getting hired because of stupidity on facebook, the not-so-funny scams to ruin reps and credit, on & on are reasons for the internet introvert to never join. damn good reasons too...

People with those concerns aren't going to change and one day decide that they want to post their life on facebook. Therefore there is no way facebook is going to win them over.....

I refuse to believe there are only a few internet introverts. what if a site purposely catered to these people? done right and it could become huge. it certainly would skim millions from facebook, the already discontent, ready to leave would jump to a place that addressed their concerns, plus the unknown amount that would try for the first time.
if you decide to try, don't forget where the inspiration came from. if I could get even a little credit for the calls I made just a couple of years ago...I started out at MS's QnA Live-beta. they took it down(w/a ten day notice!) and didn't even bother to archive it, all the links are dead. unconscionable, imo...
