Okay, so here is the deal: I was recently prospecting for a job with Hughes Aerospace (don't ask). As I'm sure you know, Hughes is pretty much it when it comes to satellite technology. The reason they were talking to me is because of how much work I put into canon's new 8x8 cmos sensor (read about it here: http://www.dpreview.com/news/1008/10083101canonlargestsensor.asp [this work done under a grant from the department of energy and actually started in 1994. The work that I did was in the fabrication. Getting decent yields when building a chip that large is damn near impossible. We made a HUGE breakthrough in this {suck it, Nikon} about 2001...which is also why you started seeing massively multicore chips start to come out about then {can't say more, still under NDA}])... ...anyway, yeah, I was prospecting at Hughes. They were trying to poach me from Canon (well, actually, technically, I work for ON, and am contracted by Canon, but I go to canon's lab everyday). The 8x8 sensor, is absolutely insanely sensitive...which is really really a big deal when you're talking about the types of optics used for space-based imaging. The lenses used for this (they're built by Zeiss but, as is usual for this type of thing, subbed out to a company located in Bazine, Kansas) were the equivalent of 10,000mm if you were to put them your standard sort of DSLR (cropped). With my sensor, Hughes would be able to capture crisper images than they ever imagined (less required light == quicker shutter speed [well, we don't actually use shutters, but same concept]). I'm getting a bit ranty here, sorry. Hughes wanted to hire me to work on "imaging satellites". I didn't take the job, but as part of the deal to even consider it, they offered me some time on one of their "floating labs" (ha, it's a satellite they keep for internal testing. They somehow got one of my sensors about a year ago and put it up there. I didn't take the job, but I did help them get it working). This is an image I got of kino101...it was taken at UTC23:30:10 on July 13, 2010 in the high desert of western Nevada: http://67.23.31.54/images/UTC233010.jpg I had to request a pretty serious equatorial descention to get this angle, btw, so I hope you like it. |

guess I'm from that older generation, this is par for the course. a style perhaps a little more classy is to fold the bill neatly in your shaking hand, then introduce yourself- no matter how many people are there and once in his handshake grasp push the bill into his palm. he will know immediately what it is and appreciate the discrete manner. as soon as he checks the amount he will approach you and let you know the time...the amount is based on the serving prices, size of the crowd and serendipity, fifty dollars is at the high end, but the last thing, the very last thing you want to do is low-ball them, ten bucks will be an insult and ruin any future chances. this is applicable for almost anything requiring a gate, entrance to a hot club can be facilitated by greasing the bouncers palm, in the old days a good doobie worked well(or, in the eighties, a small baggie)and the service usually was way better, plus they would remember you, a definite plus when impressing that date this is especially effective for getting a great table for a show, goes double in Vegas. for a popular show, and if you're late or don't know anybody, a fifty is the lowest denomination PS. for exceptional service in any restaurant use this technique on you waiter. this hidden tip goes straight into his pocket, he won't have to share. guaranteed to get you the advice for what are the best courses for that night, best wine, freshest salads, deserts, well you get the idea. anything else you all need to know from the school of the PLayboy Club? (and NO, Cody, I'm not being Mr. Most Interesting Man...although, come to think of it...:) |

|
Actually many do want us in their country and a top Iraqi general want us to stay until 2020 but we are stepping down.Who knows how long we will be there I'm sure for over 50 years as we are still in South Korea. What the significance of this change is that we will no longer be in charge of police functions. I don't think the war was worth the money or blood but the turn around we had in this war was an amazing endeavor. In 2007 the country was on the brink of civil war and we were losing over a hundred solders a month and now Iraq actually has a chance to become a stable democracy. Everything could still far apart but history could view this war in positive light if Iraq can hold it's self together which is a very big if. "Nation building doesn't work. Not now, not ever." I am against nation building in this case but it actually it has worked. See Germany Japan, and South Korea. |

Time, in a stab at journalism implies that China is some sort of pariah state, something that has been propagated for forever. while China is egregious in many many ways, the implication here is that somehow the US isn't. what a crock... in no way am I supporting China in their actions, and I am somewhat disappointed that you might see it that way. I tend not to hint around when I support something, I see nothing of the sort in my comment. however Time could have just as well reported the news w/out editorializing, wouldn't you agree? fyi, Korea has always had the rep of extreme secrecy and xenophobia, from the beginning of itself as a separate country, long before the war. just my opinion of course; China has little choice but to deal w/it on Korea's terms |

"cinema?" "films?" What is this? :P Yeah that's always been the catch with the Blockbuster no late fees thing, if you don't return them on time they charge you for the movie. It's dumb and misleading. Netflix wins. I just wish they had some sort of pay-per-view for the movies that aren't on instant watch. |
|
| Ryan | 2010-08-30 | Google Plans Pay-Per-View YouTube Movie Rentals | |
The buzz is that such a service would cost about $5 per movie, likely rented for a 48-hour period. Thanks, but no thanks. For $6 I can go to a cinema; for twice the cost of this, I can get netflix instant and watch as many films as I want. Seriously, $5? Are they insane? That's more than a physical movie rental costs (last time I checked, which was admitadly about 3 years ago[1]) [1]My horrible experience renting media from blockbuster: I had heard all sorts of buzz about this amazing new television program called "battlestar galactica". As it was Christmas time, and I was about to spend a couple of weeks at my parents' house (who have got quite the awesome home theater setup), I headed down to blockbuster and rented the first 3 disks of the first season of the show. About a week later, I get a call from blockbuster informing me that the movies are due today, and that I should bring them back right now... Strange? Well, "no late fees" right? I'll bring them back next week when I go home (at this time, I lived about an hour and a half from my parents' house.). The next day, I log in to my bank's website to check my statement, and notice that blockbuster has got a massive $130 pending charge on my credit card. Confused, and positive that this is an error, I call the store and am promptly connected with a women who, in as polite of terms and a minimum wage slave who likely hates her job can muster, informs me that I am being charged the full cost for the entire season of the show for each disk and that they took the liberty of just charging me for them. What? I got in my car and made the 3 hour round trip to return them, demanded that they reverse the charge on my card, and vowed never to return, which I haven't. Dear Blockbuster: this behaviour is why you are eyeing chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. |

I don't mean to be that guy, but... What you're saying here is just plain incorrect. Tapped beer tasting different could be due to a whole lot of factors. Travers and I grabbed a keg of Lost Cost mystery brew from our local drug dealer last week and, when we tapped it, it was sweeeett... Why? Because the last keg that I had on was my cider (that I homebrewed and was awful, but thanks for the keg, Pyramid!) and I didn't clean the lines. Some bars don't clean their lines and it results in their beer tasting off. Cans are the future... It doesn't alter the taste, it doesn't let light in. It's cheaper, it stays fresher longer, there is no risk of breaking it...everything about cans is good. |
|
| Joel | 2010-08-27 | Canned beer is the future of good beer. | |

I personally don't buy this. Newcastle is my favorite beer and recently I had just found it in the store in a six pack of cans (exactly the same price as a six pack of bottles). I let curiosity get the best of me and I purchased a sixer. I was not a huge fan, sure it tasted better then a six pack of bud, but it lost out on the qualities that make it such a good beer. This article claims that there isn't any "metallic" taste b/c the insides of cans are sprayed w/ an epoxy coating. Well Newcastle is a bit of a "nutty" beer and something within that flavor didn't jive quite right with the can. This article seems to make the claim that a beer will have absolutely the exact same taste from a can as it does from a bottle. This is total shit. Beer on tap tastes differently then it does in the bottle. I personally do not like Newcastle on tap b/c the extra CO2 tends to cut into that "bite" that it has. That is what I like the best. I only ever buy it in the bottle, even if it may be available on tap. Likewise, I prefer Bud Light bottled, but Miller Lite in a can, but incredibly dislike the reverse. Sure if you'd tried a beer out of a can for the first time would you be able to tell? Maybe, maybe not. But you might not like it enough to keep buying it. The light argument: I will say that I tend to dislike beers bottled in green glass, however the argument that all light into beer is bad is sort of like (in my opinion) the cork vs. rubber wine stops. Who can fully say that this less then perfect method hasn't actually contributed to the flavor? Sure over-exposure to light and air will destroy it, but who's to say that bit of light you get in your clear-bottled beer isn't actually re-affirming the flavor you love so much? Maybe I just like to argue with "progress", but I won't be buying good beer in cans anytime soon. |

Spent way too much money at that show. Bought BK One's mix CD, Fa Shawn's CD, Brother Ali - US on vinyl and a shirt. Awesome show though, I was able to talk to BK One about his dj gear and stuff. Really cool.

It's really sad that the Shuttle is going away...but really, it's dragging a whole lot of extra stuff with it to be a launch vehicle. It's a great way of brining brains (as well as the support systems for them) up there so that they can do experiments locally, but using it to launch satellites is kindof a waste.

"Them" being these Islamic leaders in question pushing or claiming for "tolerance" is a crock of fucking shit in my opinion. It's a social taboo in the very least. If I am at a funeral where someone has died in a war, I'm not going to turn to my bud and start chatting about shooting a bunch of dudes up in some video game. That is socially "un-cool." I don't really know who's original idea it was to try and build a mosque there, but I see it as a bit of "lets get all up in there grill about 'tolerance' when they deny us" Just like I wouldn't really want a weapons manufacture to base it's headquarters there. It's a social line that everyone is taking very seriously, and those crossing it are trying to bitch about "tolerance."

Did you actually read this article? The Imam in charge of building this place absolutely represents extremely radical Islam. This would be like if the WBC bombed an AIDS clinic, then insisted on building one of their "churches" as near to the site as they could, refusing any suggestions or offers to build it elsewhere. I absolutely understand that the terrorist attack against the WTC was not in any way representative of Islam as a whole, but the guy building this center sounds like he agrees with the attacks. |

Nietzsche changed me profound ways. Even if you don't agree with him at times he will challenge your thought process. Nietzsche work can be difficult to read but as the long as you read about what was going in Europe at the time to give you some context you should be fine. My version of thus spoke Zarathustra provides a pretty good bio and short historical summary. His book the gay science had some really thought provoking sections in it also.

|
| Natalie | 2010-08-22 | Uber-Nietzsche When thinking about happiness, consider Nietzsche. | |
This is so interesting.Nietzsche's solution is to value a life not by the sum total of happiness attained, but by the degree to which this life is coherent. To him, a coherent life is dedicated to an overarching goal or mission, where the individual's action toward this goal can be, at least from the individual's own subjective perspective, construed as heroic deeds.and According to the other reading, the true self is not given and can thus not be revealed. It must be struggled for and built. |

| Ryan | 2010-08-22 | In light of the financial crisis and Fannie and Freddie's near-collapse, policy leaders are also rethinking the government's role and many Americans are starting to question whether homeownership is the only path to the American Dream. | |
|
Uhhhggg....the author, as well as the majority of people who are still talking about this, do not understand home ownership at all. "Home ownership" is not about having your name on the deed to a house, that is called "investing", which is what went wrong (it was literally the exact same process that led to the great depression...using borrowed money to buy investments and creating a huge bubble). Home ownership is moving into a new place and investing yourself into it; painting the walls, decorating the living room, making it into a home; THIS is the "home ownership" that people are talking about when they're talking about the American Dream. It's about homes, not houses; That's what people are missing. The inflation that we saw was caused by people buying houses like they were stock certificates. The American Dream is fine. |

Yeah clearly they don't cook... or make anything! (physical, that is) This pretty much guarantees I could never do it, as much as the nomad concept is kind of appealing (not the mooching off friends part). I disagree with your last point, personally--you can backup something to the point where that's a very small concern, with a physical (on-site hard drive I mean) backup + online backup. It is refreshing to digitize media and paperwork, in my opinion. |

I think that it is really important to find a happy medium. Granted, I have a ton of stuff, and need to get rid of...well...most of it, but there really is a lot of it that I do use. I'm hesitant to say anything, because of the company I am in here, haha, but I can fix a lot of things just because I have so many random parts and tools and things around. I'm not old, these people are all older than me (the ones in the article, I mean), but I do feel like their "homelessness" (sleeping on their friends' couches...or living in a super-expensive appt. in Williamsburg) is a function of their age. They haven't found what they want to do yet. The DJ saying that his whole collection is on his hardrive? This is not normal for DJs...most of the ones that I have met/know keep a lot of stuff digitally, but still maintain a massive collection of vinyl. (Joel, thoughts?). Beyond that, I think that these people are being extreme consumerists... Your house is minimal...okay? But where do you eat? At a coffee shop? At a restaurant? Not at your house? I'm sitting in my kitchen right now (which is cluttered, but everything in here serves a purpose). Looking around, there is a rice cooker, a bag of dog food, a coffee maker, several french presses, a spice rack, a couple of bottles of wine, a bag of rice, a table, some chairs, some pots...and that's about it. There is a lot here, but there is a lot here for a reason (a lot of it had to do with my month spent intentionally never eating out...I had to buy it because I was cooking [the rice and coffee stuff, mostly, haha]). I'm rambling, haha. I guess my other thing is that they haven't really gotten rid of anything, just moved it. They're just as attached to their disks as they were to their papers...it's just moved and it's just more dangerous now because if the disk dies, everything goes with it...and most disks eventually die. Neat article though :) |

This article is stupid but in a delightful way. I especially love the last part about uploading your brain, described as though it might just be another feature of "the cloud" in a few years. I envy these guys for not having hobbies that require a lot of stuff. Just finished a cross-country move and feeling bitter. Couldn't reduce down to any less than three big boxes (though USPS may have lost those anyway) and three suitcases, and now I'm here there's all this stuff I need to buy again ("need" is relative, but I'm excited to not be sleeping on the floor soon :). |

For all intents and purposes it is, there are parties and things here and there, but 515 is supposed to canvas a variety of styles and artists from across the state. That being said, the people that ran the majority of it this year aren't really into that whole diversity thing. Partly why I did not attend. I was informed that there were to be pretty much no parties/shows this year except 515. Next decent thing is in October I think. Lame...
