About Me:
I'm the admin for this website. I grew up dorking about with linux boxes, then moved on to BSD. I am currently the admin for a company located in several locations in south-western United States. At my job I do lots of Pythoning, Perling, MySQLing, and bashing things with my Model M keyboard that was born on the same day I was! (I am extremely proud of this). You best believe that I am a computer nerd.

Interests:
Everything. Music, philosophy, candles, thinking, jeeps, stargazing, clocks, watches, beer, dogs. Everything.

Favorite Books, Movies, Music etc.:
Lately I've been listening to a lot more "folk"ish type of music. Check out mumford & sons, the builders and the butchers, or some of Darrell Scott's stuff.

Hobbies:
Photo Nerding. Jeeping. Biking. Snowboarding. Separating lists with periods and not commas.

well Ryan, I rock and roll all night and party every day. However may I suggest you make yourself a kamikaze:

* 3cl (1 part) vodka
* 3cl (1 part) triple sec (or use blue curacao for a blue kamikaze)
* 3cl (1 part) lime juice
And then make yourself 4 more.

Jewish brothers in Nazi-occupied Eastern Europe escape into the Belarussian forests, where they join Russian resistance fighters and endeavor to build a village in order to protect themselves and about 1,000 Jewish non-combatants. It's a true story and it's a really powerful movie. I thought it was going to just be average because there have been so many world war two movies made but it was an unexpected delight.

quick question: what is the syntax for writing comments? (newline, bold, etc.)
Reply to this
Ryan | 2009-11-01
Hey, sorry I didn't post this sooner. It uses markdown (the same thing as reddit, hacker news, etc.)
 *This*
produces: *this
 **This**
produces: This
 [this](http://www.example.com)
produces: this
As for newlines: markdown has a really (imho) stupid policy of requiring two newlines for ever one, and not allowing more than one at a time (I'm probably going to change the module to get rid of this).
 this

 and this
produces: this
and this
The way that I am getting it to ignore the markdown syntax is by appending 5 spaces before what I am typing. This is for pasting codeblocks and things.
To quote somebody, put a greater than sign in front of the quote..
 >like this.
which produces:
like this.
I'm going to make a guide for it (at the suggestion of another user) that will sit near the comment reply box.
Hope this helps :).

um...have you restricted comments on the Israel Blog submission?
The quote from Ashley Perry, an adviser to Israel's Deputy Foreign Minister Danny Ayalon, is quite revealing:
"The greatest threat to Israel and Zionism is Iran. As bloggers, as opinion shapers, we have to try to get people's attention to this issue. Iran is threatening through its extremism, through its propaganda. But at the moment, we're preaching to the choir... we need to reach out to Europe in particular - maybe 10 percent of the population are extremists either way and are 'sold,' but the middle 80% is up for grabs, and we're losing that battle".
so...how to tell the truth from propaganda? or is it all the same....
*just won't go through but other comments elsewhere will...

re: counting clicks...human nature being what it is, seeing a popular post makes 'em want to see what it's all about. stories w/little movement tend to stay that way. showing the amount of views worked, I think you need to keep it somehow. maybe not awarded, still...you want to avoid the appearance of dead space? if people think it's slow they're less likely to return and your site hasn't reached the critical mass to be self-sustaining yet? restricting votes is a good idea but it makes it look like few are viewing the submissions? just saying...
another constructive criticism(/sarcasm>) not sure, imho, if lowering the red standard is the right idea. not unless you plan to introduce another colour for outstanding posts. it's gonna be harder to reach 100 now, or even 50 so maybe that should be the cut and 25-30 for blue(maybe as low as 20 considering...)
anyway, it's all good, still finding the occasional tidbit here and nowhere else. it is good to see stuff here before elsewhere, the stuff fame is made from, yet if it does get famous it'll get wrecked...but it'll be a good ride!

Sorry it took me so long to respond to this...(I've been thinking about it all day though).
The problem with keeping the clicks thing around is that it doesn't scale very well... It more or less worked when it was just Cody, Luke, and I posting and clicking...but now there are usually ~1000 views/day... There ends up being a HUGE discrepancy between the links. Stuff like top 10 lists end up getting TONS of clicks because they don't require as much of an investment of time as an economics article... Beyond that, if we got much bigger, the number would just stop making any sense...
What we don't want to have happen is "fluff" articles (which I still like...I'm a sucker for cracked) dominating over the top of the interesting economics and tech stuff because they have so many more points (this is why you have to "earn" mod points).
I totally get your point about the psychological aspect of it...seeing a link with 160 points as opposed to 4 makes you want to click on it more...I'm just not really sure how to satisfy BOTH things...
Reply to this
kino101 | 2009-12-06
perhaps after x amount of clicks you just post 100+...whatever cut off works...
'You can also just comment on an article...that gives it points too :).'
ummm...well....I can see a few comments that consist of :) or :( yeah! howdy! whatever talk to the hand...hahahahahmuahahaha ha haa?
this might be an invitation for abuse later on, ya think?
*why not let people vote using a calculus of total points; amount of votes for their submissions divided by total submissions(gives those that make the best postings more), and include votes on comments etc? (after a certain amount of total points voting restrictions are relaxed?)
no matter what, high numbers are a sign of a vibrant community, it's your headache, I am enjoying watching it grow. learning a bit too, although the fickle attention is driving me nuts:) stuff I think are world changers don't get a view, can't help it sometimes....sigh
gotta let the fluff in a bit, too much seriousness isn't good, nancy's 'we are doomed' is a good case in point...

The World Is Too Complex

this keeps kicking back an old submission, don't know why. decent article, you be the judge. if it passes muster would you go ahead and post it? this is what I get, http://immgur.com/Ac2ZX.png and it doesn't repost anyway, is oftwominds blocked?

see? but this link comes up true: http://www.oftwominds.com/blog.html
'The World Is Too Complex'
click on it to confirm, then if I try to submit it that screenshot shows- the one that you recently posted, that's an old link, right? don't know why, this doesn't fall into the usual category of glitches

just being picky,..to me it's worth the effort to try to get as many viewpoints out there as possible, then people have a better chance of making informed choices/opinions...

perhaps 'self' comments shouldn't get 5 points? skews results, and you know it'll get gamed later. one point maybe, for instance I usually use comments from my posts to editorialize, that shouldn't get much recognition unless others chose to vote them up?
Reply to this
kino101 | 2009-12-11
OK, another one...as you have noticed if you're making most of the submissions there is no where to spend the points . I have 59 or so, just where am I supposed to put 'em? there aren't enough other posts or comments, unless I debase the value and give them to anything and everything. one of these days I'll remember to tell you something that works well, just hold your breath...:)

you might want to download the ' Whitepaper: 5 Key Requirements for Enterprise Social Software' from this site, (it's down under 'Resources')might come in handy. http://www.socialtext.com/offers/images /5RequirementsforEnterprisSocialSoftware.pdfhttp://www.socialtext.com/offers/images.
If you don't have it yet, get 'trashmail' add on for FF, then just right click on an email request form and it will make up an address linked to one of your real ones(you have to fill that in options in trash mail). I usually use nonymouse for a name, nony for first name...phone was 888-555-0909, like everything all made up(have you visited the google dashboard site? quite the eye-opener). like many things, when I run across something that may be useful to someone I just forward it along. noticed you haven't used the alternatives to google analytics, a couple of those selections are good, there's one that specifically lets you know if content has been used elsewhere and by whom. very useful if someone is stealing your blog content as their own.

Cool, thanks for the tip :). Have you used any of the analytics alternatives? I'm a bit addicted to GA, haha.
You're right, too, the dashboard thing is pretty freaky...particularly google.com/history
